Pride
When the water rises past your neck and you think you’re going to drown:
Raise your head up to face the clouds.
Be proud of how far you’ve come, proud of how long you’ve lasted, proud of the strong, brave, person who will never cave, you’ve become.
And maybe if you believe in yourself enough, and decide, hell yeah, I’m good enough
(maybe not for you but I am good enough)
The rain will stop falling, the gloomy prospect waters will stop rising and although you can’t breathe and your breath is running out, a friendly hand, product of your own kindness, will come to pull you out of the abyss
and tell you ‘I love you but you are so much more than this.’
Then, like a nurturing parent, the hand will float you on your front and make you kick your legs until you’ve learnt to swim.
Until you’ve learnt to cope with the dim rising waters.
You can survive now but you can’t quite thrive.
Never settle for that compromise.
Because once you’ve learnt to swim, you can definitely learn to fly,
And then your list of opportunities reaches
