STORY STARTER
Submitted by Chantel Akrawi
Write a story during the time of the Salem Witch Trials from the viewpoint of someone who’s been accused of sorcery. But, they’re no witch or warlock; they’re something else altogether…
Origins of Kameka
The Godessess worked in her favour. As everyone else preached of other religions, Kameka knew better. Her and her husband, Alejandro, kept close together. They understood the power of the Divine Goddesses.
“My love..” Yet, her husband exaggerated their danger. “For if anyone realizes you have intelligence, they’ll have you burnt at the stake. You can’t risk such things..”
He tightened her corset softly, running a hand down her back. Kameka shook her head, taking his hands into her own. “I’ll be fine. I’m so sure Aningi is on my side- I could go into the town square this second and scream I was a witch.”
Alejandro’s face dropped. “You wouldn’t dare. How could you be so sure?” His body held tense, yet Kameka seemed calm. Relaxed, even. “I would.” She stood up, taking a stride out of her dressing room. “Kameka! Wait!” Alejandro pleaded.
Without bothering to put on a pair of slippers, Kameka marched out into the town square, hands deviously on her hips. “Folks!” She shouted.
Attention went her way. Eyes of curious and judging people darted knives through her chest. She swallowed back the lump in her throat. “I beg of you..” Alejandro whispered.
Pride washed through her mind. “I..” Everyone staring made her jittery and anxious. “Am a witch.” Kameka stated proudly.
Silence.
A loud gasp emerged from the crowd. “She’s a witch! She admitted to it! Damn her to Hell!” The once curious and gentle eyes, turned to ones of hate and anger.
The once egotistical feeling she had back in her dressing room was quickly replaced with one of fear. As a man with a funny shaped nose stormed toward her, in her mind, she prayed to the one who could help both her and Alejandro.

Toqu groaned. “Why? Why would she fucking do that?!” She rubbed her temples angrily, huffing and sighing. Aningi shook her head repeatedly “But look Toqu! She’s praying for our help.”
They both felt the prayer deep within them, instilling an emotion of unease in them. “If we help her at the same time- there’s a chance she could-“ Aningi interrupted Toqu’s worried rant, grabbing her shoulders.
“Ignore all of that! We need to help her!” She yelled. Toqu shook her head. “Fine. Only this once.”

As Kameka stood against the angry crowd, she felt helpless. The yelled at her, especially the man standing in front of her. Alejandro stood by her side, mortified.
All that Kameka knew to do was to believe. She shut her eyes tightly, silently whispering the same words over and over again.
“I know they will save me.”
“I know they will save me.”
“I know they will..”

Overcome is the only way to describe Kameka. Toqu would have been right in her assumptions. As Aningi and her continued to give her power, giving her luck, suppressing her death chances, they lost their own powers.
They gave it all to her.
Kameka opened her eyes. What was once a beautiful, surreal dark green iris became a solid white. The same color as her sclera.
The towns people shrieked and wailed at the sight. “She’s controlled by the devil!” One cried. “Only a witch could do that!” Alejandro backed away as an odd sight happened.
The tips of her fingers and her bare toes began to shrivel. The color turned into a dark black, slowly spreading up onto her ankles and mid arms.
At the same time, she began to levitate into the air unnaturally. Her hair began to float up as well, as if it had been dunked into deep water. The sight of her was astonishing, yet it would suck your soul out.
The man, who was once in front of her, backed away. Kameka’s mouth opened, bending at impossible lengths. The way it was stretched, her lips would be cracked or her jaw would be broken.
An odd black gas began to emerge out of the poor man’s mouth. His own mouth opened uncontrollably, and Kameka began to inhale it.
The crowd looked horrified. As the more of the gas was taken out of the mans body, he became a pale shell of his old self.
He fell to the ground with a hard thud. Kameka stared out into the mob with her sullen white eyes.

“Then, she sucked out all of their souls! After she did that, Kameka was able to ascend to a Goddess status and kill the Divine Nine! Then, she took over, and is now ruling us today.”
Lainey shut the book she was reading out of. “Wow.. Kameka sounds.. scary.” Zamira furrowed her brow. “Well.. They were all tryna kill her, y’know?”
But, Zamira didn’t buy it. “But, what about Alejandro? Could she not have just.. I dunno- not killed him too?” She crossed her arms as Lainey groaned.
“Look. I don’t know what to tell you. I’m not Kameka.” She put the dusty book onto the shelf beside Zamira’s bed. “Now, are you happy with your lovely bed time story?”
Snickering, Zamira shook her head no. “That made me scared she might do it again.” Lainey placed a hand onto Zamira’s forehead.
“She’s nice now. Don’t worry. Now, go to bed. Please.”
