POEM STARTER

Write a poem about the heart, focusing on its physicality and actions.

Avoid the kind of metaphors and language which are normally associated with the heart's emotional connection.

My Heart

Of all the things that nature makes wild,

It leads by first foremost desire,

That endures strong or weak all the while,

Its existence betrayed when in pain to us sets fire,

The heart,

The heart,

That melodramatic part,

That when plucked tares asunder all apart,

The heart,

The heart,

That when cold won’t start,

That piece when whole stops for the stars.

My mind trapped by those things that I know,

My chest betraying all the things I do,

My Heart,

My Heart.

My will subject to that red throne,

Makes a hope a ruin that only in darkness blooms,

My Heart,

My Heart.

It can make ache my every bone,

It grows strong when loved but weakens alone,

It gives sometimes a warm embrace,

It cuts of my breath when my mind starts to race,

My heart,

My heart,

My heart.
