WRITING OBSTACLE

Write a scene between two characters who have suppressed their feelings for each other.

What features of dialogue or behaviour could you highlight in this kind of relationship?

The Aftermath

“When can I see you again?” he asked.

“We can’t keep doing this,” she sighed. The sheets ruffled as he crawled closer to her.

“What do you mean?” he felt her heart drop to her stomach. He reached out, gently caressing her bare shoulder but she shuddered away, body tense. She stood, quickly patting the ground for her clothes.

“I can’t keep doing this,” she hissed. She swallowed the rock in her throat, blinking back the tears that sprang to her eyes.

“Wh…what are you doing?” he bit his lip in contemplation.

“We agreed to keep it casual, I know we did,” she sniffled. “But I can’t. I can’t keep it casual anymore, I-,” she stopped herself short and kissed her teeth. “I’ll leave the key on the counter.”

His body was frozen, he couldnt move, he could only watch as she zipped up her pants, pulled on her shirt and snatch her bag from the floor. His mouth opened but no words would fall past his lips.

“I…,” she took another look at him, still frozen on the bed amongst rumpled sheets. She sighed, throwing her hands up before walking out.

“I love you,” his words disappeared into emptiness of the bedroom she had just left, his heart in tow.
