COMPETITION PROMPT
Write a poem which starts with the description of a sunrise, and ends with a sunset.
Each New Day
The chirp of the birds
Seems to make the sun rise
It is shining with color
A brand new surprise.
The birds love each sunrise
The day is brand new
And we should cherish each one
Whether plenty or few.
So up with the sun
We rise each new day
We eat and we shower
Then, we go on our way.
Heigh ho, heigh ho
It’s off to work we go
However we commute
Whether it be fast or slow.
I feel the heat of the sun
Hear the rumble of the street
And the grumble of people
Who I oft try to greet
With a warm, “Hello, Sam.
I hope you have a great day.”
A replied grunt is much better
Than what he likes to say.
“What’s so great about it?
You big dumb jerk.
How can you be happy
When we are stuck here at work?”
But there is so much to hear
So much to take in
So much laughter and cheer
That it makes me want to grin.
From the sound of the copier
Churning out papers
To the smell of the kitchen
Cooking with capers
Yes, the sights, sounds, and smells
Of the day are alive
They make me feel good
Way deep down inside.
Then the rumble of pavement
The honk of the horn
Signal the end of the day
Gone but not forlorn.
Then, the chatter of family
Sitting at table
Living our lives
As best as we’re able
The smell of the food
I’m content don’t you see
Living each day
As God meant it to be.
Then, the sun, it goes down
At the end of the day
The sky fades to black
With the last of sun’s rays.
But the hoot of the owl
Sings the sun a lullaby
“See you tomorrow.
Today, we must say, ‘Goodbye.’”
