Buried

I’ll miss my best friend, but mommy said he has to go on a big journey. I wasn’t sure why he didn’t tell me. He just didn’t move, didn’t make a noise, just sat there, even when I touched him, running my fingers through his fur. We waved goodbye to him and put him in a box where he curled, sleeping. Mommy said he was very tired and had to save his energy for the trip. I asked where he was going and she said somewhere far away, but he might be able to send me postcards. I didn’t know what that meant because I knew he couldn’t write or speak our language. In the backyard, daddy dug a big hole and we put the box in the hole. Before that, though, we put in some things he needed for his travels: his favorite toy and blanket, some pieces of his favorite foods, and his collar. He looked so naked without his collar, but mommy said it would be uncomfortable for him to wear on the trip. I wished I could go with him, but instead I watched as daddy lowered him into the ground and covered him with dirt again. I asked how being in a hole would get him anywhere, and mommy said that once it was all sealed up he would dig his way out and go further down into the earth, to appear on the other side of the planet. I wasn’t sure how that worked but I didn’t ask anymore questions because daddy was already crying and I think he cried harder each time I asked something. The house was quiet tonight. I hope his travels are good. I miss the feeling of his fur in my fingers. I guess I’ll wait for his postcard.
