the Bridge
The wind blows my hair. I’m standing on the edge again. But this time I don’t feel afraid. This time, there’s no one to stop me. This time, I’ll be no one’s problem any longer. The first time this happened, they took me to a facility. But that is because I failed to do it. My heart wasn’t in it. I know I will do it this time. I’ve written my farewells. They will understand in the long run, their lives will be better off without me. It’s 20 stories high. Or so they say. I hope that they don’t find my body, that my body makes it to the ocean. I’ve always been at peace with the ocean. It’s always what made me whole. Kept me balanced. And so, when my life has met me I will return.
I take a breath of that sweet air as the wind whips around me. Life is such a beautiful gift. But it was never meant for somebody like me. I dangle my foot over the edge. It’ll be so easy. Like falling asleep. Hopefully not too painful.
But suddenly, as I prepare my other leg to make the final step, I feel a tug pulling me back. I turn, and before I can fully take in the man who has pulled me back, he has vanished into thin air.
But the wind howls anyhow and I hear his voice as clear as if he were whispering in my ear.
“You will not get another chance.”
