COMPETITION PROMPT
The Heat of the Day
Write a poem inspired by this theme.
Eclipsed
As the sun beats down from above
There is little left around here to love
For what can survive this intense heat?
Walking across the barren land
Feeing nothing but burning sand
How much longer can I stay on my feet?
The day keeps dragging on and on forever/
Testing the length that anyone can endeavor/
Can nothing make the runs rays obsolete?
Heat so intense there is no cloud cover
Like a controlling, overbearing lover
Is this doomed to forever repeat?
In need of relief
No matter how brief
What could be so sweet?
But nothing is as powerful as the sun this afternoon/
Not even its antithesis in heavenly bodies—the moon/
Can the moon block the sun complete?
It seems like a farse
The chances are sparse
For with the sun, can the moon compete?
Yet the moon tries a few times each year
An effort that is consistent and sincere
But does a partial win count as defeat?
Then there is that one day
The moon holds the sun at bay
Despite not having the size or power for such a feat.
So as I walk my path in life that’s as barren as the scorched earth/
Without the natural skill or talent others have but I only desire/
Is it possible that I’m not eliminated by the circumstances of my birth/
Of obtaining all that I always wanted but feared I may not acquire?
