Like A Moth To The Flame

Amber looks out the car windshield, out at the millions of stars that decorate the sky, but Robert is only looking at her.

“Isn’t it beautiful Bertie? All those stars, if only we could dance among them.”

“The stars are beautiful, it's true, but to me the most beautiful thing of all is you, my butterfly.”

Amber’s face blushes a deep red as she turns to look into the deep blue eyes of her boyfriend. He grabs her wrist and leans in for a kiss, she pushes back.

“Bertie, quit fooling around you’ll get us in trouble.”

“I don’t care Amber, all I want is you.” Robert grabs Amber’s other wrist forcing her down against her seat. Her head against the car door.

“Bertie! You’re hurting me!”

Robert is deaf to her cries as he smashes his lips against hers.

In that moment the car is struck by an immense strike of white light, throwing Amber out the door to safety. Barely having time to process what had just happened she turns and runs in the direction of home.

“AMBER WAIT!” Robert calls through the dark, his years of running track aiding him in his hunt.

Whilst Amber stands against a tree catching her breath he runs right up to her barely breaking a sweat.

“I’m sorry if I scared you Butterfly, but I want you.” The shadows of the woods hide the softness of his face only highlighting his hungry blue eyes.

“Get away from me Robert, I thought you were different, I’d thought you would wait.”

“Wait? How can I wait? I’ve got twenty bucks riding on this.”

Every vein in Amber’s body heats up with a severe intensity. She gives in to the pain using it as fuel to stand against the guy she dreamed she’d someday marry.

“I hope this was worth the twenty bucks” the light bursts from her body and bends itself into two large iridescent wings glowing against the night sky as she’s lifted into the air.

“Butterfly?” Robert falls back, his hand gripping the dirt beside him tethering him to the ground.

Amber’s red hair flows like fire above her head as her eyes glow a sickening white. “Butterfly?” A voice booms down into Robert’s ears. “I am not a butterfly, I am a moth. And you!” She points down at the boy cowering below her. “You are nothing, but a speck of dust waiting for me to devour.”

Amber comes down upon Robert with such force that his body is pushed six feet down into the ground. He dies upon the impact of her fists grazing his face.

Once calm Amber reverts to her human form and buries Robert where he lay making it his permanent grave. She heads back to the car, climbs into the driver’s seat and starts it. She looks out at the millions of stars in the distance and drives towards them, no destination in mind, just drawn to the light like a moth to the flame.
