The young puppy cuddles next to the dragon. He has a home now...

A Friendship From Fire

The fire was raging through the village, every building was ablaze as screams tore from the throats of those trapped inside. The people fortunate enough not to be trapped were falling over each other in their futile attempt to reach safety, paying no mind to the small puppy they were trampling on, just as they always had.

The puppy didn’t know what to do, he knew the fire had encircled the whole village, there was no escape. He felt no remorse for the village that was being destroyed, though he had lived there since he was born it had never really been his home. He ate scraps of food that people threw away and slept alone in the cold night. The people ignored him, or kicked him, finding amusement in the suffering of a young puppy. For such a small puppy, he was filled with so much hatred towards the people of this village and delighted in seeing it destroyed - or would have if he weren’t about to die along with it.

A roar that rivalled the many screams boomed through the sky like thunder as the sleek purple dragon glided over the burning village. Despite the destruction around him, the puppy stared up in awe at the magnificent, yet dangerous, beast above him. The dragon swooped down to land in the middle of the fiery street, the people scattered but the puppy didn’t move.

The dragon let out another deafening roar and the puppy shrank back out of fear but still didn’t run. The puppy’s eyes locked with the dragon’s, the dragon began to approach him slowly, never breaking his gaze. When the dragon got close enough it lowered its wing allowing the puppy to climb up it onto its back. Once the puppy was up and steady the dragon took off again, soaring high above the village and away from the raging fire. They landed shortly after at the mouth of a cave on the mountain. The puppy hopped down off the dragon’s back and followed it into the cave.

Inside, the dragon lay down and looked at the puppy, it’s stare wasn’t frightening though and the puppy carefully made his way over. The young puppy cuddled next to the dragon. He had a home now.
