What Could Have Been

Ada Parsons stepped onto the boat with a large smile on her face. She had long awaited this cruise, wanting to get away from her work and spend some time for herself. The crew took her bags to her room for her, and she rushed straight to the top deck, ready to feel the sun on her face and the wind in her hair.

But then she saw her, Lenore Bowing, a girl who she had left behind years ago. Lenore’s hair was as long and black as Ada had remembered, and her eyes were the same shade of deep blue. For a moment, Ada wanted to approach her, but then she snapped out of the dream. Lenore was dead to Ada, and for good reason.

Watching them both was a third girl, Cassandra Howell, who was very shocked to see the two so close together, knowing the events that had transpired years ago, events she had caused. Cassandra had been a desperate, lovesick girl back then, one who had wanted something so badly that she had ruined it for herself by mistake. She regretted her actions, but she was still not an entirely changed person. That is why she spoke.

“Ada, Lenore,” she said. “It’s funny seeing both of you here.”

All three girls stood, in a frozen state, watching each other. Thoughts raced through their minds. Colorful memories passed silently thought their eyes as they considered wether or not to speak.

Ada looked at Cassandra, her old best friend and closest confidante. She had thought Cassandra cared for her, but years ago, she banished that thought from her mind. Tears formed in her eyes as she remembered that horrible day when she watched Cassandra kiss her love, Lenore, right in front of her eyes. Then, she looked to Lenore, still as beautiful as ever, and realized that she was still holding on, even though she had never felt more betrayed.

Lenore looked at Cassandra. She remembered their kiss. She remembered how it made her feel something she shouldn’t have. She remembered it as a lovely moment, until she remembered what had came before. Lenore cast her eyes away from Cassandra as she thought of the knife Cassandra had put up to her throat right before she had forced the kiss. Then, Lenore looked to Ada, the girl she thought she had loved. She felt guilty of course, not for kissing Cassandra, but for allowing herself to enjoy it.

Cassandra looked to Lenore, remembering the knife and the threats she had made. She regretted their kiss, not because she had forced it, but because she had never actually wanted to kiss Lenore. Cassandra looked over to Ada, her old best friend whom she had loved from the very beginning, the girl whom Cassandra would do anything to have.

The three stood there for several minutes in silence before they all mutually walked their separate ways, silently agreeing that some things were beyond repair.

Sadly, none of them understood the thoughts going through the others minds. By leaving, they never found out what could have been.
