When This Life Is Over
When I have spent the fleeting years,
The ones that Heaven kindly gave,
When I have burned through joys and fears,
A thousand suns to light my grave,
When my heart, weary, turns to stone,
And splinters with its final break,
When tears I’ve wept could flood alone
The oceans and the endless lakes,
When hands that trembled, held, and lost
Have felt their final warmth and chill,
When beauty shines, though lined with cost,
And sorrow bends beneath my will,
When all the days and nights are done,
Will peace come softly to my soul?
Will angels guide where I must run,
And make the broken pieces whole?
Oh, sweet darling, I beg of you,
When my lungs breathe no more earthly air,
Hold me within your heart so true,
And let me linger softly there.
Remember how I loved you so,
When I must spread my wings and fly,
When this life is over, and I must go,
I’ll wait for you where beauty lies.
