Finally Enjoying Life
“I think I just met the happiest person in the world!” I exclaim into the salt air.
Every Saturday morning, as I walk the dogs down the beach, I spot a gaggle of ladies, in blue robes, chatting loudly and sipping from thermos.
Once a week they put on their swim suits and walk hand and hand into the cold Irish Sea.
This morning I had a bit of a lie in and started my walk a little later. By the time I got to their usual spot there was only one lady left.
“A beautiful day isn’t it” she called out to me a huge grin on her face, eyes crinkled at the corners, illuminated as blue as the sea.
Poppy runs over to great her, I adjust my stride and walk over to them.
“Just here alone today?” I ask looking around.
“The last one left, it was a great swim! I’m just taking my time before heading home.”
“I’ve always wondered what it’s like to do cold sea swimming”
“It’s life changing” she said grasping my arm.
“I started, 5 years ago. I needed something just for me, a hobby. I didn’t realised until I started how much I needed a group of great friends too. Now I’m finally happy, finally enjoying life. I recommend you join us some time.”
Her eyes always stayed bright, a smile always looming on her face.
She turned and grabbed her chair, and walked back up the beach, humming the hills are alive with the sound of music.
I turn and look out over the beach.
