One Long Night

One long night

in the depths of infinity

the ripples of space held

the weight of great sorrow.

Darkness herself laid perched

atop Saturn’s ring,

humming a joyless melody

as she idly caressed

the sparkling rivers of Cosmos.

Since the creation of Void,

space had never once bared life.

There lived no witness to Darkness

or the wonders embedded within it.

Wonders woven delicately by her fingers

shining solely with the purpose

to provide soothing and comfort

to those consumed by eclipses.

She wished to be dreamt upon

with every shooting star

fired by her bow across heaven

wished to possess

meaning and purpose

to both herself and her creations.

Until then,

Her constellations align to no astronomer

Her planets rotate to no dweller

Space stood forever in stillness

Never to be seen

By a living soul.

Within the space Darkness occupied,

Universe sensed heartache.

And space trembled in anguish,

Obliterating entire galaxies from the quake.

He couldn’t bare the thought

of something so beautiful

and so breathtaking

possibly perceiving themselves

as pointless.

He had watched her

wander into his galaxies

in search of life and a friend

only to ever be met with

storming planets and infinite black holes.

He had loved her

since the creation of her first star

and would continue to do so

until his very extinction.

He would grant her happiness

even if it meant

she would love something more

and he would no longer own

her entire heart.

His decision was made.

He clasped his hands together

and the Big Bang took place.

A burst of pure energy summoned

entirely for his love for Darkness

And with patience for evolution

Humans began to look up at night.

Children wished upon shooting stars

Lovers confessed beneath a full moon.

Eclipses sparked enthrallment

And Darkness was renamed as Night.

The time of day where problems seemed

insignificant at the sight of endless stars.

And one dreamt of one day joining them

Long after their stories are written

and they’ve turned to stardust.

To this day

Universe smiles with tenderness

every time he catches a familiar laugh in space.

Laughs of pure bliss and euphoria

as Night dances with the children of earth.

And days when she cries of joy

and can’t contain her delight

in finally being gifted a family.

Universe wonders if are both aware

that with each passing day

they continue to save each other

with their presence.

And if humans know

that to Night herself

they are more beautiful and special

than any star

ever born into the universe.
