STORY STARTER
“He’s… He’s dead.” The messenger barely choked out the words, his eyes wide with horror. Swallowing, he extended a trembling hand.
“But he left this behind.”
Ignorance Is, Bliss?
I nod, and reach for the leather satchel. The messenger still hasn’t realized that I’m not the person this message is intended for. Whoever they are must be very important. But this poor guy just came running up to me in tears, I wasn’t going to add insult to injury by telling him that I’m not the right guy. Besides, if it’s easy enough to get me confused with this other man, then how important could this message really be? I’m in too deep now to tell him the truth. I’ll simply keep up this charade, give the poor felllow a hug - then send him on his way. And he’ll never have to know and can grieve in peace. If there is somthing important in the sachel then I’ll make a point to find the rightful person myself. Anything to spare me from facing the truth of this awkward encounter.
“May the gods smile upon you. I’m so sorry for your loss” the man says, then climbs back onto his horse. Wiping the tears from his eyes. His gaze hold mine for a moment, then he nods, flicks the reigns and journeys off without another word.
Well, at least He’ll never have to feel the awkwardness I just did. A mountain of grief, perhaps. I hesitate to open the bag. If it’s filled with precious family heirlooms I’ll have to find it’s intended owner. If it’s gold, or treasure, or a pair of shoes with solid soles - Honestly, I will keep it for myself. Life has not been kind to me financially lately and I could really use the help. Hopefully the deceased will forgive me.
I take a deep breath and look inside. I see a long, glass phallic shaped object that catches me by surprise. And a thick notebook. I’m hesitant to touch either.
I open the notebook and find its filled entirely with the ramblings of a madman. The first line reads, “My love - if this finds you then the worst has happened and I’ve met my demise. It’s up too you now to finish my life’s work. I’ve written in this book all you need to know. But for now you must take this glass D****, protect it with your life. And when you find the evil wizard you must find a way to shove this glass D**** up his A**. It is the only way to save the kingdom. Everyone’s life depends on it. I’m so sorry I failed us all.”
