The hospital is quiet and welcomes the eerie feeling with a warm hug. It was an accident. Ellie didn’t mean to be speeding down the backroads. She didn’t mean to run that stop sign. She didn’t mean to send her best friend to an early grave. But it happened.

All Ellie wished was to be with her best friend, May. Whether that be laying to rest in a coffin six feet under, or to be eating lunch under their favorite shade tree, where so many happy memories happened. That same tree, is where they became one and tied themselves together in a pact with a set of shoelaces. One can never be while without their other half.

As she lay in the hospital bed, she fiddles with the shoelace she has tied in a knot around her wrist. It was May’s shoelace from the first day they met and became best friends. The shoelace calls to its twin that is down the hall in the morgue. To where Ellie will find herself shortly. As the girls, just like the laces, can never be a full set without eachother.

Ellie gets her wish and becomes indistinguishable from May, as they take their final resting place next to each other with the matching shoelaces adorning their right wrist.
