Failed Hope
I looked at the doctor, pleading for some other news. This wasn’t suppose to happen, this wasn’t what they told me weeks ago. I did everything they asked. Why?
“Thank you, doctor” a soft voice answered the devil in white. The turned to her, my will smile vanished.
“It’s okay—
“What’s okay? Tell me!” She paused. A beauty that she is, even in this dreaded place she managed to look like an angel. She still have her glow and her smile plastered on her face. She looked as broken as I am but they don’t show.
“You know what my mom used to say when things get tough?” She asked. I didn’t answer, too afraid that I would break down. She shifted and held my hand. She looked deeply into my eyes, searching for my answer.
“She said, ‘When all hope fails, enjoy what is left while it lasts’. Fred I know what you are trying to do, but it’s not working. So just, please stop and enjoy the time we still have left. Please”
I couldn’t look at her, how could she give up so easily?
“This is your life or death we’re talking about, we can’t give up!” I screamed. Her smile flattered, agony of the news finally came to her.
“I know” she whispered “Fred, I know. Don’t you think I’m trying? But sometimes, you have to know when the battle cannot be won.”
“They are not telling us something I know it —
“FOR THE SAKE OF HUMANITY, JUST SHUT UP FRED!”
She sobbed. For the first time in my life, I was helpless, utterly helpless. I wish I could’ve done something more for her. I should’ve taken the risks of ‘what if’s’ with her. But now I look at my beautiful wife, all I can see darkness.
“When all hope fails, enjoy what is left while it lasts”
Surely it had left the both of us.
