Not A Hero Today.
I run towards the ambulance and hop in. Giraffe has hurt his leg and it needs a plaster. I race around the streets. “Woo woo woo woo.” The noise of my ambulance makes everyone get out of the way. I see Giraffe laying on the floor. I grab my bag and run towards him. I know what I need to do. He needs fixing. I get down on my knees next to him, I tell him that it’s all going to be ok. I get the bandages out of my bag and begin wrapping them around Giraffe’s long legs. I pick him up then knowing that he will need to go to the hospital. I carry him over to my ambulance and place him in the back. I jump back into the driving seat and start the siren that will tell people to get out of the way again. I drive him to the hospital knowing that they will make him all better.

Gerry stood in the hallway leaning against the doorframe of the living room door . He loved watching his son play. “You ok son?” He asks when he was sure his son had just carried his beloved story toy into his make-believe hospital. “Yes.” He said. “Giraffe is going to be made better.” Gerry smiled a tear beginning to fall down his face. “You like that game don’t you?” He said watching as his son climbs back into the box that he had been using for an ambulance.
“Yes because it’s the job you do and when I’m older I want to be a hero just like you.”
Gerry tried to smile again before turning away.
He was of course like any father would be, pleased that his son saw him as a hero, but not so much on a day like today. When the call had come in for him to attend to a woman who had been in a car accident he hadn’t felt like much of a hero. He had known when he pulled up that anyone would have been lucky to have survived but she had, well for a whole ten minutes after Gerry had arrived. He could see the blood coming out of her thick and fast and he knew that with the state of the crushed car that was surrounding her they were going to be running out of time and fast. He had spoken to her, held her hand, and listened when she had begged him for help. But by the time they had cut a big enough hole in the car for her to be removed it had been too late.
So yes he was pleased his son thought of him as a hero, but today he didn’t see himself as one.
