It Doesn’t

The court room was quiet. They all stared at me, every color of eye was in the room, brown, blue, green, even black.

“I repeat. Did you or did you not kill Rose Fleming.”

I gave a small smile, “If you want to know go look at her grave.”

The detective shook his head, disapprovingly, “I want a yes or a no.”

I bent my head back, letting the cool air from the open window blow my hair.

I sat up, my smile still plastered to my face, “So what if I did? Why don’t you care about the rest of my family?”

The detective’s head shot up.

I continued, “My oldest sister. She got away. Jess. My oldest brother, he didn’t. He was the first to go. Robby. Let’s see Wyatt was next and then Rose. You know the crazy thing is I drowned her in the pool.”

The detective looked at me his eyes only covered in fear.

I kept going, “That’s not the crazy part. She kept fighting me and I was like, ‘I saved you for last you ungrateful, little.”

The crowd start whispering. Something that didn’t bother me, never would.

“You killed your family?” The detective asked. What is it with him? Why does he need a yes or a no? Isn’t my word on what I did good enough?

I nodded my head, “Yes I did.”

“Why?” He spoke before I finished my sentence.

I laughed, “Maybe that’s the wrong question.”

He shook his head, “I’m sorry but Claire. This is not a joke. You need to act serious.”

I laughed, grabbing the pencil that was on the table. I tapped a few times before I answered.

“I don’t have a serious. If I did then we wouldn’t be here.”

I tapped the pencil faster.

The detective shook his head again, “Claire. You need to find your serious side. By tomorrow. And you need to drop the. . . Whatever it is that makes you think this is funny. Let me assure you it’s not.”

I smiled watching as he stood up, “Detective, maybe it’s you who needs to stop being so serious. I’d say the only way you’ll figure out this case is if you stop acting like everything in life matters. Let me assure you it doesn’t.”
