STORY STARTER
You are in a room with all the characters you've ever written into your stories. Who will be the most problematic for you, and who will befriend and protect you?
Whaat
I looked right and left. “Ash… Tiwaki…. Jasper…. Rose… Martin… I wrote about you in Galaxy wars! And… Ava and Chloe? From Ava Rides Her Bike and Chloe’s bad day? I haven’t thought of you since I was a little six year old…” I’m down on my knees, crying becuase I’m so, so happy that all my creations are in this room with me. All my protagonists, friends of protagonists. More stream in— my characters from Wild Kids, Devan, River, Natalie, Oliver, Logan and Maya. And Rose, Violet, Max and Bolt from Superhero School. All of my book characters here from all the books I’ve written, over the past seven years. My earlier book characters, Ava and Chloe, look a lot like 2D cardboard cutouts with plain, wobbly drawn bodies. The rest are realistic but have a slightly animated touch.
“How are all of you here?”
“It appears that you were lonely and wished for help and company. We heeded the call from the words you wrote on your device, sobbing and wishing for comfort. Even though you put us through much, in the end you created us, and helped me in particular get back my rightful throne,” said the wizened Jasper in his proper kingly fashion.
“I met the man of my dreams thanks to you,” smiled Rose, her cheeks flushed and face smiling as she kissed Jasper.
“I’d never have met Ash, even though you put us through a war,” smiled Tiwaki, bumping her girlfriend’s side.
“I would have never felt happy, without my powers and with Dad away,” said Violet smiling sadly in her quite way.
“And I wouldn’t have met all my besties!” Bolt cheered happily.
Rose and Max laughed. “Same for us.”
“We all met Mother Nature, and now we’re safe from all the humans that could be dangerous to us,” said Logan, a Wild Kid, looking around at his friends.
“So… you forgive me?” I asked.
“Of course we do,” said everyone.
I laughed. “And thank goodness that the antagonists aren’t here.”
“Says who?” Came the sly voice of Victor, the student turned spy from Superhero School. “Sorry we’re late.” He smirked as he walked in the room.
“Now now, Vic, we musn’t be friendly,” sneered his father, Evil Dr. V. “After all, we are here to obliterate them.”
“Get them Wild Kids,” growled the farmer from Wild Kids, dashing in. “No idea who the others are but I gotta get them WIld Kids!”
Finally, the worst comes— Sneed McDevil. He strides in. He carries a vial of… I can’t even believe it. “Oh, no,” I whisper. “Everyone get down!”
Ash, Tiwaki, Martin, Jasper and Rose know what it is. They pull everyone else to the ground and order people to hold their breath or else. I do so just as Sneed throws down the vial, shattering it and releasing a poison mist into the air.
The mist clears and everyone looks up. All the antagonists except for sneed now have blank eyes. They stand in unison and march towards us. The mind mist has them all obeying sneed.
Tiwaki throws down the anti mist. It spreads, infecting the villains. It clears and they are normal again… which is not nessecarily a good thing. They recover and decide to get us all.
Suddenly, flowers bloom in the room. Vines travel up the walls and the breeze rustles through the window. Gracefully, Mother Nature grows out of vines snaking across the floor. Her grace, authority anf beauty causes everyone to stop for a minute.
Gently, she blows a kiss to the villains, sending flower petals tumbling towards them. “Time to go whence you came.” They dissolve into the flowers, looking around in surprise.
“And now back to your books,” she says smiling to the others. She gathers them in her arms.
“Mother Nature… how did you know?” I asked.
“I know and see all,” she smiled. “I made you and you made them. I know what you know and therefore, what they know. Farewell.”
“Call if you need us!” Tiwaki shouts over Mother Nature’s shoulder as she leaves, gracefully stepping out the window and vanishing into the distance.
The vines and flowers fade. The sun goes behind a cloud.
I am alone again.
