Once upon a time…

No, that’s not the right way to start. But then what is the right way? Maybe something big like:

It had never been the same since she died.

Then again that doesn’t work. Maybe something that grabs the readers attention like:

Hey, reader! Guess what? I just got your attention.

You know… that actually works. I need something for the middle. Something that is a huge improvement or discovery. Like what if unicorns were real?

If unicorns are real then dragons and mermaids are real too. Pirates! Yes, pirates are very good. I mean, bad. I mean, good for writing material but bad in general. You know what I’m saying right? Right.
