Lost in Texas

Odette was walking down the path. She missed her train and was abandoned in a small village in Texas. She needed to get back to Salt Lake City in Utah. Suddenly, a large car stopped in front of her when she reached the road.

“You a hitchhiker?” the man in the car asked. Odette nodded. This was honestly the quickest way to get back. “Where do you want to go?” he asked. “Is the train station ok?” Odette asked. The man nodded. Odette got in the car, and the car went down the road. When they were fairly away from the civilians, about five miles away, the man looked at Odette. “You know,” he started, “it’s pretty dangerous to go into random strangers’ cars”. Odette didn’t even flinch. All she did was ask “your a killer?” in a tired voice.

“What do you think?” the man asked. Odette just sighed and got out her pepper spray from the pocket of her skirt and aimed it at the man. “It’s also pretty dangerous to drive random people, drop me off here” she ordered. The man laughed. “Do you really think that’s going to make me stop from-“ but before he could finish, Odette sprayed the can dry and threw it in his face. She stopped the car while the man rubbed his eyes and Odette hopped out in the middle of the road.

It was getting late and Odette was about three miles away from the train station. She had missed her train but she still had enough money to buy a new ticket. She knew she can’t get there before morning, so she looked around for a place to stay.

There was no way she was going in a strangers’ house after what happened. Finally, exhaustion overcame and Odette just slept in the grass beneath her. It was surprisingly peaceful, and it reminded her of the times her family would walk out when it was humid. After a long two days of hunger and isolation in a basement, she was finally able to get sleep. By morning, she was going to get on the train, and she’ll see her cousins and twin brother, and together they’ll go back home to their kingdom.
