#1: Charlie

It was the middle of the night when Charlie walked back in through the dog door after completing his business. The moon was full and the air was quiet and serene. Not a cloud in the sky was covering the beuaty and depth the universe offeres to the world each night. As peaceful as it was, Charlie still completed his nightly round of checking on both of the kids, Ruthie and Isaiah, as well as the parents. Charlie was never trained to do this, he just felt a sense of importance in his own personal calling to ensure the family’s safeety each night. He may have only been around for the last couple of years, but he was determined that nothing would ever happen to his family again. Before his family picked Charlie out to be with them forever, he was the reserved and timid one of the litter. He was always the smart one, but knew that his sense of fulfillment would come from helping someone to have a better life. When Jamison and Esta picked him out, Charlie vowed to himself that his loyalty to these people would never waver. And when the twins came along just 7 months later, Charlie’s devotion to the prottection of his family was amplified beyond measure. When the twins and Esta had to be away from home for an additional two weeks following their birth, Charlie felt helpless and longed to help all three of them. Jamison was the only family member he saw; and while he was grateful for any sense of relief, it was not the same as having everybody home within Charlie’s safeguarding. However, once the twins and Esta returned home safely, Charlie’s entire world changed. Now not only was he responsible for the protection of the family, but his top priority each day was to make Ruthie and Isaiah smile. Charlie’s favorite activity to do with the twins was going for walks. And each walk provided him the opportunity to chase the birds. Whenever Charlie chased the birds, the twins would giggle uncontrollably and Esta would smile as well. Charlie’s favorite thing in the world was to see those two happy.
