I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings
I know why the caged bird sings
Its melancholic tunes that drift over the seas.
It beckon to us —
The city and the world —
And hopes for someone to notice its hurts.
I know why the caged bird sings
Its determined melodies that rise above the trees.
It wishes to soar —
Spread its wings in the sky —
And fly like an eagle so mighty and high.
I know why the caged bird sings
Its pensive notes that move in the breeze.
It has a dream
To one day emerge
And finally touch ground on this planet called Earth.
The little bird cries,
Day-long and all night.
Staring through the bars;
Wanting to reach for the stars.
Its heart is out there,
Not in its constraining cell,
Where fears abound
And doubts keep it drowned.
It wishes to be heard —
To let loose and gain height —
So let this little caged bird sing
For outside those bars, freedom calls to he.
