Frontier for Secrets

Eleven days have now passed since the beginning of Thomas and Felix Spondryn’s journey in the sparsely inhabited planet Kalnereg. Although it was heavily populated once upon a time, this small world is currently home to millions of trees grown from the decomposed remains of former residents who died during the First War of Wanim. So many lives lost, but are still able to provide oxygen for many others.

The Spondryn Brothers walk side by side and aimlessly through the crowded forest, not seeing any civilization at the moment. They both appear exhausted, having been carrying their camping and food supplies for hours at a time, multiple times a day.

“How much longer are we going to keep hiking?” asks a hopeless Felix. “We’ve been camping at this planet for more than a week. I don't think we're going to find it.”

Thomas, despite feeling somewhat hopeless, is still fighting to stay optimistic and determined. “Felix, we can't just leave. We may have searched many other planets for the ancient text to no avail, but we can't just say it's nowhere to be found.”

“Well, how do you know that the text still exists? How would you know that it hasn't already been destroyed?” asks Felix.

“I don’t,” says Thomas, “but would you prefer to return to the others empty handed without at least trying?”

“We have tried!” shouts Felix.

“We haven't tried enough,” says a more assertive Thomas, “the fate of our allies rests on this text. If we can use it to summon the Wanim Leviathan, we will surely end this second war. Now would you like to continue this mission with me, or would you not like to be a hero?” He suddenly starts to fast walk ahead, leaving Felix to grow some concern for his elder brother. He chases after him.

“Hey,” says Felix, “don’t think for a moment that I have given up our cause!”

He catches up to Thomas who surprisingly has stopped and appears in awe at what he is witnessing. Felix looks in the same direction as Thomas and suddenly feels more joyous. The entranceway to an ancient castle from the first war remains standing after all of these years. It is at this moment, the brothers know that they are finally approaching the end of their quest.

Devoid of their surroundings, they both rush to the stone structure and enter a dark tunnel, pulling out their lanterns in the process. Unbeknownst to both brothers, a mysterious figure has been watching them from afar.

Thomas and Felix climb down a wooden ladder to a basement made of stone. They both scan the space until Felix spots a wooden locked chest in the far corner. He signals Thomas and they both walk over to the corner. Both are excited, but they hold it in, expecting to become disappointed. Thomas kneels down, places his lantern down, pulls out a hammer, and busts the lock off. He opens the chest with higher hopes, and sure enough... the Spondryn Beothers have found a scroll containing the ancient text they have been searching for so long.

They briefly rejoice, only to be interrupted by the sound of large thumps coming from above them. Shocked, they quickly put out their lanterns and blend in with the dark, preparing for a fight. A moment goes by and no footsteps are heard. Anxious, the brothers light up their lanterns again and climb up the ladder quietly. They see no other life forms, but they notice that the entrance has been closed off. The brothers panic as they have now come to the realization that their departure has been delayed, worried about what could happen.
