Spirit Bird

Within a cage of bone, a fragile thing,

A feathered heart with longing in its breast,

Yearns for the boundless sky, the wind to sing,

A whispered dream, a hope that will not rest.

But fear, a serpent with a chilling gaze,

Enfolds the bird and poisons its delight,

With tales of storms and treacherous, cruel ways,

And endless falls from soaring heights of light.

Yet still it beats, with courage newly strong,

And pushes back the bars with all its might,

A silent battle fought its whole life long.

Then bursts from bondage, on defiant wings,

Leaving its doubt and fear on shattered things,

To taste what freedom bravery may bring.
