POEM STARTER
Write a vignette about a runaway seeking shelter in an abandoned building.
A vignette is a passage that’s mainly descriptive. Try using the five senses to enhance the description of the scenario.
Dripping Water
‘Plunk’
Water dripped from the ceiling of the floor above, falling nine or ten meters to the floor where Sam sat. Huddled in a corner, wet, cold, and shivering, the child watched the entrances of the room. Tiny white eyes darted between doors and windows and betrayed the terror that resided behind them.
‘Plunk’
Sam huddled further into the corner, trying to become invisible as footsteps could be heard outside the collapsed building. The men outside tried the doors and windows, but found no access point by which they could enter.
‘Plunk’
The shades of brown faded as the sun set and no more light came into the room except the single ray of moonlight which reflected off the pool of water that stood in the fallen debris from the floor above. Sam’s eyes darted between the growing shadows until eventually closing for sleep.
‘Plunk’
I know this is not a poem, but the scene came into my head fully formed and I wanted to put it down in text.
