High School Heart Break

I clench the letter in my fist. My heart pounding, bound to beat out of chest. If no one else were talking I’d swear you could hear it hit against my ribs. I approach Ophelia. Her strawberry hair hanging over her shoulder, her brilliant blue eyes shining bight. “Hey Ophy.” I was nervous….it’s been so long since I last used her nickname from our childhood. She smiled the most perfect smile at me. “What’s up Jack! Haven’t heard you call me that since middle school.”

“Nothin much… so uh…. Valentine’s Day is coming up, and I was wondering if you wanted to go on a date? Ya know… if no one has asked you to be a valentine’s yet.” I spat out what needed to be said. The letter still crumpled in my hand. Her smile vanished as quickly as it appeared. My heart was cracking. She didn’t have to say anything. “Jack. You’re my best friend. Heck you’re basically my brother! I couldn’t be your valentine’s, you know this.” With every word she said, a knife twisted in my heart.

“I understand Ophy. I’ll see you later k? I don’t want to be late to class.” Before she could objected I turned around and walked away. Dropping the letter of her confessing her feelings, I found in my locker. I knew it was too good to be true.
