STORY STARTER

Write a scene in which two characters have very different emotions about the same thing.

E.g. One character could be very happy after finding something out, whilst the other is sad about it.

Coffee Date

“And for you miss?” The waiter asks me.

“Just a coffee please.” I reply

“Any milk or sugar?”

“No thank you”

“Alright, I’ll be back shortly ladies.” The waiter says before walking away.

“So?” I ask Jess in a obnoxious tone while elbowing her. “What did you think about him?”

“I just got out of a relationship Danny, I’m not looking to start a new one.”

“You say that now. Just wait, I’ll find you the right guy.” She rolls her eyes at me and sighs. The waiter starts to walk back over to us with our drinks, stopping at a table to give a refill. “Nows your chance.” I whisper to Jess.

“Here you go ladies” He hands us our drinks and Jess says thank you for the both of us.

“Excuse me!” I say just as he’s turning around.

“Yes?”

“What’s your name?”

“Brian.” I lean forward, resting my elbows on the table and putting my chin in my hands.

“So Brian, how old are you?”

“Twenty two.” He looks confused.

“Oh, so your in college?”

“Yeah?” Now he sounds confused. Nevertheless I go on.

“Where do you go?” He doesn’t reply. “Lexicon, Concord, HTL, frackshourd?”

“I go to Brixington.”Expensive. Now that I think about it, he looks like he comes from money. Good for Jess.

“The best in the state.” Is all I let on though.

“Yup” He says akwardly.

“Uh Danny” Jess says. “I seem to have dropped something under the table. Will you help me look for it?” She gives me the do as I say or you’ll regret it glare. So I do as she says.

“I’ll be right back.” I tell Brian before I follow Jess under the table. “What did you drop?” Sarcasticly Jess pulls a pen out of her pocket and drops it.

“What was that?” She asks me.

“What was what?”

“The interrogation you just held!”

“That wasn’t an interrogation. I was just figuring out if he was good enough for you!”

“Haven’t we been over this? I’m not looking for someone right now!-“

“I know, I know but you haven’t even given him a chance!”

“Danny!” She says exasperatedly

“Jess!” I say matching her tone. “Here’s your pen.” I say with an icy edge to my voice.

“Thanks.” She says, this time matching my tone. Silently we bring ourselves up to our seats.

“Well I’ve got to go.” Brian says his cheeks now two whole shades brighter of red.

“See you later Brian.” I say while Jess only gives a short blunt wave.

“Right” Brian says before scurrying off. We stay silently sitting until we see Brian go off into a staff only room, then we break down laughing.

“Do you think he heard us under the table?” Jess asks me stopping the laughter.

“Every word.” I reply. We just stare at each other until the laughing fit continues.

“Your so obsessed with him why don’t you go out with him.” Jess says in between giggles.

“Excuse me, I’m in a relationship. I just love playing Cupid.” I say while wiping my tears with a napkin.

“You always have.”

“And I always will.” After that the talk of Brian subsides and we catch up on life.
