If existence shuffles

infinite realities

between its clever hands,

then in one world

we are knitting

our lives together as we

move back and forth

in the kitchen, trading tasks

while dinner simmers on the stove.

At times, I decide I was dealt

an unlucky hand so that I can

wallow in rage at the unjust

nature of chance. It’s easier

than wondering

whether I could have

played my cards right

and won a lifetime supply

of that gentle smile.

At times, I swim in a flood

of what-ifs until I’m

drowning in my daydreams.

But, in truth,

if existence offered

to deal me a new set of cards,

I couldn’t risk the possibility

of a life where I never

met you at all.
