Ice

They said they’d chase me here, but they never did. I’m alone - running in the cold. I didn’t even have time to put my shoes on. Y bare feet slam on the ice, sending shivers throughout my entire body before I go numb. But I continue across the frozen lake, fleeing from nothing, just waiting for someone to come and find me. Rescue me. They said they would. They begged me not to run away. I wasn’t that fast, though, and they’re still nowhere behind me.

I look down at my bleeding, blistering feet. They’re turning blue. I see a reflection under that ice that makes me pause. Someone is there? Under the ice? It’s not just my reflection. There’s someone who cares, someone who came to rescue me.

As I watch, my smile fades and the ice cracks beneath my feet.
