The Darkness Of The Light
I wish I could this Halloween had been like every other one. But no. This year was different. There was no “Trick or Treat” this year, nor was there dressing up and laughing with Amy, my best friend. Because all I saw this Halloween was… darkness.
It all started the week before Halloween, when me and Amy were discussing the prize for the winner. You see, every Halloween my and Amy have a competition to decide who got the most candy that year. After Trick or Treating, we come home a mess of sweat and giggles to plop pool down in the couch and count. It took forever, but we knew if we are just one price it could effect us.
Anyway, me and Amy were trying to decide between money prize or bragging rights. Amy said bragging rights, but I said money. Eventually we decided to drawl lots, and while I was scampering out of our treehouse to get paper, I saw him. It was a hulking mass of cracked flesh, with piercing orange eyes that were staring intensely at me. However, I thought it was just my older brother trying to scare me, so I thought nothing of it and moved on.
When I retuned with paper, the figure was gone but so was Amy. Frowning, I looked around my yard for her, thinking my brother frightened her into hiding. That’s when I saw the eyes. Now they were pearly white with a streak of black across the top. I was terrified. My brother could not change his eye color in two minutes. I scamped into my house, completely forgetting about Amy.
A week later, I watched kids of all ages knocking on doors, smiles on their faces. I sighed a leaned back into my desk chair, picked up my pencil and continued writing.
It turned out Amy and my brother were in on the prank the entire time. My brother had in fact dressed up and changed contacts while I was inside. Amy was hiding behind him. But the reason why is what shocked me. Amy wanted to test if I was a real friend and would “ rescue” her from the scary guy. After I ran inside, Amy came inside and confronted me, and now I lost a friend.
I know what your thinking. That she ditched me for a stupid reason. But Amy showed me the impossible: the darkness of the light.
