I did not mean to be so enabling to my ex husband. The fact that he was an alcoholic didn’t strike me as a huge problem until I moved in with him. It was then that I began to see both sides of his personality. On the one hand, he was incredibly generous with his time and his love, but on the other hand he could be, when drinking, extremely sparse with his affection. But I loved him very much, and kept his secret hidden from family, friends and co-workers for several years, often lying about his whereabouts, thus covering for him. The relationship was extremely volatile, and in due course we grew apart. Yet I still miss him to this day.
