The Promise

Rainne walked in the front door expecting him to be slouched on the sofa playing video games again. Just like every other day when she got home from work. She tried not to let it bother her because he, too, was still grieving the loss of their parents. She loved her brother but sometimes her own grief and frustration got the best of her and she took it out on Evan. He’s only 13, she thought to herself. I need to be patient and let him grieve in his own way.

Daniel and Susan McCormick were killed in a head-on collision 5 months earlier. The shock to Rainne and Evan was immeasurable. Rocked to their core, their lives shattered in an instant by a drunk driver, Rainne was suddenly no longer the big sister but the parent, as she was 10 years older than her brother Evan. As she walked down the hall towards Evan’s room, Rainne thanked her Fathers spirit for leaving them on solid financial ground. Daniel McCormick had been a very successful entrepreneur, owning several businesses and being very well connected politically.

“Evan!” she called. Knocking on Evan’s bedroom door she said “Evan, I’m home.” She opened the door only to find the room empty. No Evan. “Where is that boy?” she muttered under her breath.

Maybe he’s outside, she thought, then chuckled, realizing how ridiculous that sounded. Evan didn’t like the outdoors, never had. Still, she opened the back door, looking left and right over the large expanse of lawn, checking out the pool area, but there was no sign of Evan.

Rainne started to worry now.

Something wasn’t right.
