We used to stare at the stars at night. It was her favorite thing to do before she fell asleep. Gazing at the moon in wonder, she always asked “how far is the moon?”. I told her “it’s far.. really far away, but it’s how far I would travel to be with you no matter where you go.” As her breath grows more shallow she whispered to me “since it’s really far you need to rest and take breaks before you see me. I don’t want you to be tired when we see each other.” Tears filling my eyes my vision turns blurry. Grabbing her hand I told her“ when we are gone we become stars and I know you will be next to the moon when that happens. So I will travel the moon to be with you once more.” Slowly closing and opening her eyes she placed her small cold hands on my face. “I know you will because you love to the moon and back. Right?” She said with her smile that always got her out of trouble. As I stared into her eyes I held her hand that was touching my face. “I love you past the moon and the whole universe and back. I love you so so much.” Closing my eyes I remember holding her everyday. From being carried in her moms belly to being in my arms when her mother passed away to her first day of kindergarten and each time I felt that I can carry her for the rest of her life but then I realized that the smallest coffin is the heaviest. The sun in my chest has stopped burning and all I’m left with is the moonlight gazing in my soul. I sit in the moonlight gazing at the moon looking for her star so that when I find it I can stop taking my break and will travel to see her once more.
