The Killer
Clutching tightly onto Sarahâs shoulders, the girl stared up at her sister with wide, fearful eyes. Her face grew ashen as she violently shook her sister.
âAre you in trouble? Sarah, are you in trouble?â Sarah furrowed an eyebrow, but remained silent at her sisterâs paranoia. Mitziâs eyes widened even further and her breathing labored.
âS-Sarah? Are⊠are you the killer?â
Sarah blinked, stunned at the accusation. Then, she became frustrated and scoffed.âWhat?! Mitzi, calm down! What are you talking about.â
Mitziâs grip loosened, and she took a step back, still wary but now uncertain. âThe news!â
âWhat about it?â
âSarah!â
âMitzi, what! Youâre freaking me out!â
âThe news! They said theyâre looking for a killer. They described a woman, and you⊠you look like her.â
Sarah stepped back, her face riddled with concern. âMitzi. You'd have to be an absolute fool to believe that!â
âBut I donât know what to believe!â Hot, blistering tears threatened to spill.
âI am not a killer, Mitzi! Okay?!â Sarah walked in circles as she racked her mind for a response. âD-Donât believe everything you hear. Theyâre always telling you l-lies on the news.â
Mitziâs face contorted with a mixture of emotionsâfear, doubt, and a hint of desperation. Eyes wide and searching, her labored breathing intensified. âThen, why wonât you tell me where you were last night? Why were you acting so strange? That was not like you, Sarah! Y-You gotta turn yourself in! If you really committed a murder-â
âI was⊠working on a surprise for your birthday,â she interrupted. âYour birthdayâs in a couple days, yeah?â Mitzi nodded. âOkay then. I didnât want to spoil it, so I was at the art studio, trying to finish your gift.â
Mitziâs eyes softened considerably, but were still searching. âYou promise? Youâre telling the truth?â
Sarah nodded earnestly. âI promise.â
âYou promise promise?â
â Mitzi, I would never do anything to hurt anyone. Do I look like I could kill?â
âAnyone could kill if they had a reason,â her voice vibrated lowly. This made Sarah go quiet.
Mouth agape, Sarah stared at her sister for a moment, rubbed her hands down her face, and breathed in deeply. Shaking her head again, her eyes found their way to Mitziâs and softened into dough. âI am not a killer. I; am; not; a; killer. I couldnât kill a spider.â
âA fly.â
âWhat,â Sarahâs brow crinkled.
âThe expression youâre looking for is, ;I could never kill a fly.ââ
âI could never hurt you, is what Iâm saying. Youâre my sister, and I love you.â
Fresh tears began spilling as Mitzi hurried to wipe them.âI know, but⊠Iâm just scared, Sarah. I canât lose you.â
âYou donât have to be. Iâm here. Iâm not going anywhere.â
âYou better not.â Her threat was muffled as she buried her face into Sarahâs shirt. The two sisters stood in the foyer, enveloped in each otherâs arms, as they tried to soothe one another.
