POEM STARTER
Write a poem about a messy room.
Whether literal or symbolic, think about what the messy room can tell us.
Organized Chaos
Aripiprazole pills arrange themselves mosaically
Counted without purpose
They find their way back to the cotton confines of their plastic home
The dust layers like a wedding cake on various surfaces
Childish fingers trace phallic drawings through the fine particles
It’s art
So are the week-old bedsheets slowly pulling away from the mattress
Too many pillows, not enough space
A stuffed zoo squishes itself into one drawer
Exhibits include
A stegosaurus, an Ikea alien, Spiderman, Zero from _The Nightmare Before Christmas_, two otters, an unidentifiable arthropod, an avocado, and an Angry Bird pig
Sometimes, growing up isn’t desirable
Half-empty or half-full
The drinks scattered about the space beg to be thrown out
Iced coffee petri dish
There’s an ecosystem beneath the surface
100 Funko Pops stand tall and quite menacingly against the wall
They run the place
Empty vapes stack in various hiding spots, they can’t find their way out
Journals upon books upon scripts upon paperwork
It’s a solvable maze of half-baked projects and ideas
Dead ends are home to the unfolded laundry
Air blows itself from the grimy fan, expelling dust like a light snowfall
On the neglected PC, on the plethora of figurines, on the books both read and yet to be read
The organized chaos settles into a stillness that welcomes me home
I know it waits for me with open cluttered arms
It doesn’t judge but always awaits change
Yet, nothing ever does
