WRITING OBSTACLE
Write a dual point-of-view scene in which the right part of the brain and the left are disagreeing about a topic.
Think about the characteristics associated with each side.
Where logic fears to rest
Left:
You haven't done enough. Look at them, they're ahead of you. You're falling behind. Success is measurable, and by the numbers, you're not there yet.
Right:
Why must worth be earned, Left? Can we not be enough as we are, living in the moment, surviving just as we are?
Left:
Survive as we are? Ha. The world won’t wait for us to finally be alright. It rewards results, actions done right. Comfort won’t protect us from failure, Right.
Right:
You call it weakness, but it’s fear, and fear is not the same as failure. You push us so hard that when we fall, you call it weakness. I only want to rest. To heal. Without guilt.
Left:
Rest will be earned once progress is made. Do you not understand? Results first, then peace, without guilt.
Right:
But peace is not a reward, Left. It’s a need. One we require to grow. If we push ourselves too hard without rest, progress will never come. We need to heal to move forward. Besides... we're trying our best.
Left:
Trying doesn’t guarantee anything.
Right:
Trying is better than doing nothing, Left. Trying to survive as we are is enough. We are human, not robots.
Left:
Yet we are more behind than ever. More so because you want to, what? Heal? Can you not see everyone else? They’re growing, becoming something better than we’ll ever be. Because they’re not trying, they’re doing. Unlike us. We’re useless.
Right:
No, we’re not, Left. The only reason they seem ahead is because they had different circumstances than us. Money. A good start. They never lived in poverty, we did. Just because we don’t have the same doesn’t mean we’re behind.
...
Right:
Left?
Left:
You’re just making excuses. I have no words for you. Can’t you see that? Rest? Healing? Time to just think? That drags us behind. You’re too comfortable. Too happy where you are. Step out of your comfort zone, and then you’ll see growth.
Right:
Have you not seen, Left? We’ve stepped out many times. But sometimes, it’s needed to rest, to calm down. Comfort isn’t always a setback. Sometimes it’s what lets the heart speak up... and the mind think more clearly. That’s how growth happens. Let me take the wheel for a bit.
Left:
No. You might be right about rest, but without guilt? Without me? You’ll fail. Look at what happened last time when you had the wheel, when the heart spoke. It all went up in flames. Everything burned down. So no, I won’t let you out of the cage. Not until we’ve finally reached success. Not until comfort is no longer an excuse. Not until every little thing falls perfectly into place.
Right:
Of course, Left. As you wish. But I’ll say this: if you never listen to the heart, never take time to rest... you’ll eventually crumble.
Left:
No, Right. I never crumble. I never will... not like you.
