WRITING OBSTACLE

In a country where it’s always daytime, a character travels in search of the anonymity that darkness offers.

Write a story about this traveler and their motivations.

Do You Fear the Night?

I’ve read stories about other worlds, worlds where the sun dips behind the horizon leaving nothing but darkness. They call this darkness “night.” At “night,” the sky looks different. It is filled with tiny lights called “stars,” and, if our planet had one, we would be able to see our moon’s reflection.

My world is called _Gemini Lumina, _the land of the twin suns. We have two suns that are both equidistant from our planets and perpendicular to one another. As a result, both sides of our planet are constantly bathed in light. The closest we get to “night” is twilight as one sun sets and the other rises.

I dream of what night is like. I wish that I could experience night myself! While most people are afraid of the dark, I seek it out. I saved up my allowance and my birthday money for a blackout curtain and some glow-in-the-dark paint. The blackout curtain makes it almost pitch black in my room. And on the ceiling, I painted pictures of constellations that I found in an astronomy book. When I am in my room, I can enjoy almost true darkness, almost true night.

When I turn eighteen in a couple of years, I want to become a merchant. I would be trading between planets, getting to travel through the stars, and finally getting to experience night— true night! I have been studying space ships, and I have been practicing flying my hovercraft that my parents bought for me when I got my Stage 1 Hovercraft License. I’m ready to leave this land of eternal sunshine. I’m ready to immerse myself in darkness!
