A Dark Night

Heard the trailing garments of the Night

Sweep through her marble halls,

When the hours of Day numbered

Night laughed more,

I dream I’m taken by light in her arms

At long and dear last,

Awake, I chase this fatal thought,

And see the shadow cast,

As Night showed his dark, grim face

Reduced to ghostly gloom,

The imminence of Death’s black night

Brought heaven closer to you.
