COMPETITION PROMPT
Write a story with the simple theme of 'Shelter'.
Home
I was your shelter, never your home.
But I was there when you needed me.
When the wind whipped your face and the rain chilled your bones, I held myself sturdy for you.
And it rained for what felt like forever.
Long enough for your skin to warm
Your mind to clear
Your eyes to wander.
I built this shelter from sticks and rope,
of course the mansion look nice.
The white picket fence is new and fresh, of course it would draw your eye.
But I need you to look at me now.
Look at the leaky, dripping roof.
Look at the flaws in the walls.
Look at me.
And remember that this damage should have been yours.
Remember how I broke myself for you.
Remember that once upon a time, I was all you had.
So look deep in my water logged eyes
See what it took to keep you alive
Before deciding you no longer need me
Before leaving me to rot in the rain.
