COMPETITION PROMPT
Write a poem where the central theme is reflection.
The Woman That She Used To Be
There’s a stranger in my mirror
I wonder who she is
She wears the same blue eyes as me
She’s draped in a similar skin
But there’s something different in those eyes
A sadness soft as snow
A hesitance- a self defense?
A heart that’s laced in woe
Where did that vicious woman go?
Who took her claws and teeth?
Where can I find her fire, her drive?
What’s hidden underneath?
I want to scream at her, this girl
To grab her through the reflection
To shake her awake from her dissociation
To brush off the worlds harsh rejection
I need her to see me, the she that she was
The woman that let her rage roar
To feel that violent venom within me
To feel anything, anymore
She’s just out of reach, though, a handprint away
An inch thick of glass in between
And with my own feet, she leaves me behind
The woman that she used to be
