The Dandelion Treaty
My son and daughter
Standing in a meadow together
He’s covered in streaks of dirt
And her knees bloody from a fall that hurt
An argument ensued
They look my way for me to choose
Who is right and who is wrong
A different day, but the same old song.
Fuzzy wisps twinkle past my eyes
Making me smile as the ethereal seeds float by
I ask my children to look at the dandelions scattered in the field
And switch the questioning for their answers to wield.
“As you observe this flippant plant, would you consider it a purposeful flower or wasted weed?
Does it just take up space or fulfill nature’s need?”
Puzzled by the topic change,
They paused to study the aspect of the dandelion and its range.
Plucking its stem from the rich soil
Emitting noiseless kisses to launch the bristles on a journey
Wondering where it’ll land, and how long in the air it twirls.
One child quickly made their decision
“This flower is just here, it has no mission.
Much like a weed, just taking up space.
A product of a desolated and unloved place.”
Quick to defend the helpless flower,
The other child began, “it holds much power
For those who stop to admire its beauty.
Unleash their inner child, blowing the leaves in the wind like it’s their duty.
The dandelion evokes wonder and joy -
I believe its Mother Nature’s toy.”
Smirking, I admire their thoughtful responses
And tell them they are both correct.
The dandelions definition depends on the person.
Some see a magnificent flower,
While others find it as an eye-sore and weed.
But no matter what your definition is - it still exists.
Different perspectives don’t change what it is.
So children, I hope some wisdom you partake from this humble creation.
Agree to disagree, but respectfully.
It’s okay to see things differently - and this is known as The Dandelion Treaty.
