POEM STARTER

Title your poem after someone you have felt profoundly influenced by in your life.

It doesn’t have to be someone you know personally, but the poem should reflect why this person is important to you, even if it is not directly about them.

I beg for you to teach me,

To continue teaching me,

Because I have no idea what to fucking do.

I question your judgement, staying with someone who wanted someone else,

Who only came back at the end of the night,

To sleep in his own bed.

Is this what I deserve too?

Stranded on an island, by myself,

Sinking slowly, declaring, SAVE OUR SHIP.

But what’s ours?

The acceptance of being second best?

Maybe you taught me that.

Is there anyone to save me?

Can you tell me? Will he be the one to save me?

This was a heavy hitter! I was not expecting that at all. It first you do start out with the focus on admiration but the bitterness slowly seeps in. Love it!

Dang. This hurts. And you bring up some solid points. You come across clear and aching. Compelling, even :)

“Who only came back at the end of the night, to sleep in his own bed.” Speaks volumes.

As for feedback, ending on “Is there anyone to save me?” Might be your best bet. The last two lines seem to support that question, but it doesn’t need help. I’d say sucker punch us with that question and leave us, gobsmacked, in your wake.
