Waterwitch

The year was 1875. A coven of witches had travelled from Ireland, all the way across the Atlantic and were visiting a small island off the coast of Canada. At the end of summer, every year, a group of witches travelled to Newfoundland to forage for supplies they needed for potions and spells. The coven had gathered a barrel of mixed mushrooms, chanterelles and chaga, bundles of wild mint and rose, and multiple jugs of water sourced from an iceberg.

The witches boarded their ship, appropriately named the Waterwitch, and started their journey back to Ireland. Unfortunately the witches did not complete their voyage. They struck poor weather, the wind and rain making even their seasoned captain lose control. The swells of the sea were too big and too strong and the Waterwitch took on water and eventually capsized not far off the coast of Pouch Cove. All souls on board were lost.

It is said that when the salt air blows off the ocean, the witches’ magic comes with it, coating the town in a layer of mist and sorcery.
