Coffee
Everyones world always started out grey, they said if it stayed grey you were bound to have a grimly life. It seemed everyone around me had their color, except me. My world seemed to be even grayer if possible. My friends tell me to relax I still had time, but as the years passed even they flattered slightly with that belief. My last girlfriend left to avoid being in my crossfire, I’ve felt isolated.
I walked down the bustling street past small shops and restaurants, everyone seemed happy. I walked into a small cafe picking up a coffee before heading to work. The barista was a sweet lady around my age she smiled and toke my order, a small latte. I stood waiting, I zoned out slightly thinking of my long workday ahead. Her voice snapped me back, I accidentally brushed her hand when grabbing my coffee and the whole cafe turned various shades of brown. She gasped slightly, It made me think how maybe they were wrong on the color theory, maybe it isnt something that just happens maybe someone sets it off. I scribbled my phone number down on the back of my receipt giving it to her and racing off to work.
Work was really the last thing on my mind all I wanted was to talk with her and tell my friends I saw a color, Brown. It was warm and inviting, I found a beauty in brown. I looked at my cup finding the girls name, “Alyssa.” Pretty name. I zoned out through most of the work day all I could think about was her. It was all mindless things I’d been doing for the past six years.
In the car driving home my phone chimed, I pulled into my driveway sloppier than usual excitedly pulling up my phone. It was Alyssa, I shot a text back. “Hey, my name is James. Im sorry for leaving so suddenly I’m on second strike.” She sent back a laughing emoji, “Don’t worry I kinda figured.” I smiled at my phone making plans for the next day. The whole world seemed to melt away nothing mattered but seeing her again.
