COMPETITION PROMPT
Write a poem inspired by the Butterfly Effect.
The Butterfly Effect is the concept that one small action will create big change further along the line.
Hurricane
If I could tell you, darling
What would happen in a year
Or even more,
You would bow your little head down to the bitter ground.
I would not do that to a child. Even if it mean things would be different.
Less... painful.
People say that things happen for a reason
But I disagree. We didn’t deserve that.
Nothing could make me grateful for what happened.
A butterfly’s wings are supposed to cause a hurricane on the other side of the world.
If you could kill it, stop those paper wings from flapping,
Would you do it?
Could you promise that there would be no hurricane?
That there would be nothing worse?
We live in fear of unsavoury ends, each action leading to a different domino path.
Each clatter more permanent than the last.
Knowledge of devastation leads to feelings of devastation.
I will not let you live that life. Terror that each step brings you closer to the inevitable.
So when you ask me,
What the future holds,
I will grin and nod,
And hold a gentle finger to my lips.
I will let you keep that hope, even though I know
It doesn’t get better.
At least,
So far.
