STORY STARTER

Submitted by Quill To Page

Write a short story or poem that starts with a letter.

It can be a death threat or a love letter, a mission or a murder. It could be any letter, but make it integral to the story.

Matchstick

Raina,

I shouldn’t have fallen in love with you.

It’s been a week since the incident, and all I can think about it how much your friends miss you. How ignorant and stupid it was for me to let you out of my grasp, and I kick myself everyday for watching your body crisp and shrivel around the fire of my guilt. My mother’s house I had dropped a matchstick in, and let everything I’ve ever regretted fight to crumble under the flames… including you.

I regret ever letting you approach me. Having you be so close to me when I knew in the back of my head just having your hair brush my clothed shoulder was enough of a threat.

I risked confiding with you of my potential, and even then you looked past it. You had held up your mirror to my face and showed how I was perceived in your eyes. I wish I could have believed the illusion of my reflection.

The bittersweet truth that it has taken me days to come to my own senses, and the conclusion I’ve came to was that you didn’t deserve to be in that fire. I never regretted every day spent with you, every moment of closeness I felt when you were beside me, and I’d search in the second world for your soul and beg you for my vulnerable forgiveness. May this letter burn alongside me, as I trade my pencil for a matchstick.
