POEM STARTER
Write a vignette about a runaway seeking shelter in an abandoned building.
A vignette is a passage that’s mainly descriptive. Try using the five senses to enhance the description of the scenario.
Fractured Silence
The world spins on, but I stand still,
A heart that’s heavy, yet no one will.
I wear my smile like a fragile veil,
Afraid to show that I’m bound to fail.
Inside, it’s darker than the coldest night,
A silent scream that’s too weak to fight.
I reach for help, but no hands are near,
The silence deafens, feeding my fear.
The walls close in, but I cannot run,
The pain of a thousand battles never won.
My thoughts are chains, my breath is thin,
A war within that I cannot win.
I wish they knew how much it hurts,
How deep the ache, how sharp it spurts.
But I say nothing, I stay inside,
Hiding the tears I cannot hide.
Each day I wear a different mask,
Hoping no one will dare to ask.
Because if they knew, they’d see the cracks,
And wonder how I still come back.
But I am more than what I show,
A soul that’s bruised, a heart that knows,
That even when the world feels lost,
I’ll keep going, no matter the cost.
Yet in the quiet, when I’m alone,
I break, I shatter, I come undone.
The weight too much, the pain too real,
A wound so deep, no time can heal.
