The Sick Cat
Lying on the ground, sick and rugged it’s fur, I stare into the cat’s soul. It speaks to me as if hungry as I believe I must find it food. “But it’s a street cat” I ponder, understanding such cats always find a way around. This is only an assumption as I shouldn’t generalize as I run into the grocery store near.
“What could they have here? I hope they have cat food.” I question myself. I can only think about translating my American dollars to the currency used. I run down the aisles finally reaching the cat section, when I see something I’d never believed I’d ever see..
It was as if I could recognize them so clearly, as they search for cat food themself. Holding their basket, he looks at his phone suddenly sensing my stare.
He turns back to look at me, but I know him.
I couldn’t bare hiding, no..
I straighten my posture and I walk towards him brightening my face with a smile and lit eyes. “He will recognize me” I say with my gestures as I begin browsing throughout each cat snack. “ I’m so glad I found cat food but I must hurry!” I remember, in hopes the cat is still lying in position. I suddenly sense his look.
I’ve become focused, quickly grabbing a bag, ready for my exit.
“He’d better say something to me” I think as this moment cannot be ignored. I lift my foot to walk off and..
“ Sorry I know you’re in a hurry but what is your name?” He stops me with his interest. I know I must go..
His eyes stare into mine with such a glow and puppy like feel. His mouth shaped as a slight smile of amazement and cheeks reddening with nerves.
“ Outside” I reply with the desire of him following me there. I also contemplate continuing this conversation due to my lack of vocabulary..
“ What?” He asks confused beginning to come closer.
Everything about him, he knows what to do. He must know that he’s already with me. I stare into him and I can’t help but smirk.
“ I have to go outside, there is a sick cat.” I explain concerned. I quickly turn around. I believe that if he knows, then he will follow me. I sprint walk to the self checkout register but I can hardly understand it. I stare at the screen and suddenly, a hand reaches passed me, tapping a button. I turn around to look at him as he begins “ I got it.” He scans it and pays for it with such a surprise to me.
He knows I need to hurry.
“Let’s go” he says ripping the receipt from the register as we sprint together to the outside.
The cat has gone.
I look back at him feeling apologetic quickly reaching into my bag for money to give him.
He stops me reaching out with his hands saying “ No please, it’s okay.” That’s when I notice.. he looks like the cat..
As he wore black and white clothing, like the fur of the cat. The cat had a black dot by its eye, and here he is with a birth mark by his eye. The cat had black paws, and he wears black cuffs to his jacket. The cat has green eyes, but he does not have those.. So it’s weird to overthink this huh?
“ Did something happen recently?” I question him. “ .. Yeah. It’s been a lot lately.” He replies looking down to the side. His eyes begin to water as I take my palm to absorb his tear into my skin.
“ I’ve never felt like this in my life. You are the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen” he says to me.
I’ve never believed in love but very strangely, I too shared this feeling with him. I’d never thought I’d encounter such a sensation.
He was the sick cat looking for food to fill his hunger for life. My eyes are green and so were the cat’s. His eyes are only for me as if I’m his life.
Across worlds, I could recognize his soul.
